For around 400 years, Xanten was one of the most important Roman sites in Germania. The remains of the Roman town are open to the public at the LVR Archaeological Park in Xanten, which is the largest open-air archaeology museum in Germany and a real hit with history buffs. Roman buildings have been reconstructed to incredible effect, revealing what life was like for the Romans in a provincial town.

The harbour temple, amphitheatre, inn and impressive town wall with fortified towers are amongst the spectacular sights to behold. Visitors can even watch archaeologists live as they dig, look inside Roman houses and explore the shipyard.
