Kulturkirche St. Jakobi

Ogham-stone CHURCH.svg

St. Jakobi Church The St. Jakobi Church, first mentioned in 1303, is the youngest of the three parish churches in Stralsund.

In the 14th century, the central nave was raised in the original hall church, the side aisles were expanded with chapels and the west tower was built. With the 68 meter high tower, the choirless church has its most beautiful architectural part. The basilica clearly stands out from the other churches on the Strelasund thanks to the differently glazed molded stones and the ornamental wealth of screens and friezes.

The Church of St. James suffers the most damage in the history of Sunda's churches. During the Wallenstein siege in 1628, thirty projectiles destroyed the church. In 1662 the Gothic tower pyramid burns down due to lightning. Artillery fire in 1678 and 1715 caused considerable damage to the interior of the church. At the beginning of the 19th century, the French used it as a horse stable. During the air raid on October 6, 1944, St. Jakobi was badly hit. The magnificent pulpit by the Stralsund sculptor Hans Lucht can be saved from the interior by outsourcing. In 1995, with the support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, a thorough restoration of the entire building began. The St. Jakobi Church is now used as a cultural church for art fairs and events. In the Gustav-Adolf-Saal you can see interesting music and theater performances.
